Site Planner Guide: Design CCTV & Network Layouts
The Worldstar Site Planner lets you lay out security cameras, recorders and network gear on a floor plan, a satellite map or a blank grid. You can see what each camera covers with DORI distances, check PoE and NVR channels, total up the cable, and turn the plan into an estimate or a quote request. This guide covers every feature, for dealers and for customers.
Your plans are private. Plans stay in your account. For dealers, customer names and site addresses in Site details are encrypted with your estimates key, and Worldstar never contacts your customers.

About the videos and screenshots: they use a sample company, a made-up floor plan and sample customer details. Dealer prices are blurred in the screenshots, and the videos show no prices. All videos are in the Worldstar Site Planner playlist on our YouTube channel.
1. Start a plan
Dealers open My Account > Site Planner (/my-account-2/site-planner/). Customers start at /site-planner/ (see section 16). Under Start a new plan, give the plan a name, choose Feet or Meters, and pick one of three starting points:
- Upload a floor plan: a PNG, JPG or WebP image, up to 15 MB for dealers (10 MB for customers). For a PDF, save the page as an image first. The file is stored privately in your account.
- Use a satellite map: type the site address in the search box and pick a match from the suggestions (it also fills in the plan’s Site address and the quote form). Zoom in close and press Start planning here. Distances then come from the map. You can switch between Satellite and Streets view.
- Start on a blank grid: sketch a layout from scratch. Each grid square is 1 m (or 5 ft).

Tip: plan names are not encrypted. Dealers should put the customer name, phone and site address in the plan’s Site details (Properties tab), which are encrypted with your estimates key.
2. Set the scale
A floor plan image has no built-in size, so tell the planner how big it is. Map and grid plans are already to scale.
- Choose Scale in the toolbar.
- Draw a line along something whose length you know, like an outside wall or a door.
- Type its real length and confirm. Every distance, cone and cable length on the plan now uses this scale.

3. Place devices
The left toolbar has groups for CCTV (Bullet, Dome, Turret, PTZ, Fisheye, NVR, Monitor, Intercom), Network (PoE switch, Router, Access point, Wireless bridge, Rack), Access control, Objects (Door/Win, Object, Add column, Add stairs), Security / Perimeter and Tools. Each group button shows the last tool you picked from it, so one click places it again.
- Pick a device and tap the plan to place it. You can keep tapping to place several. Press Esc or choose Select to stop.
- You can also drag a device from the toolbar straight onto the plan.
- Hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) while you drag to drop a copy instead (see section 29).
- Tap a device to select it and drag it to move it. Its settings open in the Properties tab on the right: label, type, rotation and more.
- Use Zone to mark areas and Text to add notes. Undo, redo, zoom and full screen are in the top bar.

4. Link a product: specs fill in automatically
Linking a device to a real Worldstar product is what makes the plan accurate and puts the product on the bill of materials.
- Select the device. Under Properties > Product (at the top), search by product name or SKU.
- Pick the product. Its type, view angle, lens, IR / night range, resolution, DORI distances, lens count and PoE draw fill in from the product’s own specs. They are tagged from product specs.
- Every field stays editable. Apply product specs restores the values from the product. Unlink removes the product.
- Use for all unlinked links the same product to every unlinked device of that type in one click.

5. Field of view cone
Each camera draws a cone showing what it sees. Its width follows the camera’s view angle and its length follows the range.
- Drag the camera to move it, and drag the handle at the end of the cone to aim it. You can also set Direction and Rotate in Properties.
- Without a linked product, choose a lens preset (2.8 mm to 12 mm) or type the View angle and Range yourself.
- The CCTV and Network buttons in the top bar show or hide each layer, so you can look at coverage or cabling on its own.

6. DORI distances
DORI shows how much detail a camera captures at each distance, using the IEC 62676-4 pixel-density levels. The planner draws them as coloured bands inside the cone and lists them under the camera’s properties and on the BOM tab:
| Band | Pixel density | What you can tell |
|---|---|---|
| Detect | 25 px/m | Something or someone is there |
| Observe | 63 px/m | What a person is doing, clothing colour |
| Recognize | 125 px/m | Whether it’s someone you know |
| Identify | 250 px/m | Enough detail to identify a stranger |
- specs means the distances come from the product’s spec sheet. calc. means they’re calculated from the horizontal pixels and view angle. Type a value to override either one.
- Turn bands off for one camera with Show DORI bands on this camera, or for the whole plan with Show DORI bands on cameras.
- The bands are drawn on each camera and listed in its properties; the plan legend no longer repeats them. The printout includes a camera coverage table, and Print options can leave the bands off (see section 33).
Approximate values: DORI distances assume good lighting and a level view. Real results depend on mounting height, lighting, glare, weather and image settings.
7. Multi-lens, 180° panoramic and 360° fisheye cameras
- Multi-lens cameras: set Lenses to 2 (dual lens), 3 (tri-lens) or 4 (quad / multi-sensor). Each lens gets its own cone and its own direction (Direction (lens 1), lens 2 and so on), so you can aim them down different aisles. Linked multi-sensor products set the lens count for you.
- 180° panoramic: choose the 180° panoramic lens preset for a wide half-circle view.
- 360° fisheye: the Fisheye camera covers a full circle, which suits the middle of a room or warehouse.

8. Icon size
On a large site, or when zoomed out, device icons can be too big or too small.
- All devices: use the icon-size control in the top bar, or Icon size (all devices) under Display. Tap the percentage to reset it to your default.
- One device: select it and use Size of this device (− / +, or the slider). Reset returns it to the plan size. Apply to all icons in this plan copies the size to every device.

9. Cable runs
- Choose Cable in the toolbar.
- Tap a camera, then the switch or NVR it connects to. The run is drawn with its length.
- Select a cable to change its type (for example Cat6).
Lengths come from your scale plus the Cable slack % set in Properties > Scale (10% by default). Totals by cable type show in the legend and on the BOM, and can go on the estimate as a note line.
Straight-line estimate: cable lengths are measured point to point plus slack. Real routes go up walls and around obstacles, so check them on site.

10. Network checks: PoE and NVR channels
The Network tab checks the design as you build it. A red badge shows how many issues there are.
- PoE budget: the total draw of the powered devices compared with each switch’s budget and port count (for example “28.6 W of 370 W PoE, 5 device(s) powered”).
- NVR channels: cameras compared with recorder channels, with a warning when you have more cameras than channels.
- Unconnected cameras: cameras that don’t have a cable run to an NVR or switch.
- Long copper runs: Ethernet over copper is limited to 100 m (328 ft), including slack. Add a switch or extender, or use fiber.
PoE draw starts at a rough 6–12 W per device until you link a product or type the real figure.

11. Bill of materials
The BOM tab lists every linked product with quantity and SKU, the cable totals, and a DORI table for each camera. Dealers also see their dealer price and extended totals. Customers see product names, SKUs and specs without prices. Devices not linked to a product are listed separately so you can link them before quoting.

12. Add to Estimate (dealers)
- At the bottom of the BOM tab, under Estimate, choose your options: Add cable footage as a note line and Attach this plan to the estimate (customer link and PDF).
- Press Add to Estimate. A new estimate opens with every linked product at your normal selling price, the cable line, and the plan’s site details.
- Review it, add labor, installation or other lines, and save. From there it works like any estimate. See the Dealer Estimates Guide for sharing, approval and invoicing.
Labour, mounts and connectors are not added automatically. Add them to the estimate yourself. To estimate only part of a plan, use Create estimate… (see section 34).

13. PNG, print and PDF
- PNG: downloads the plan as drawn for print, at 2x resolution, cropped to the plan with the legend, ready to email or drop into a proposal. Save PNG is also in Print options.
- Print: opens a printable site plan with your logo and company details (from your Spec Sheet Profile). It includes the plan, the equipment list, the network summary and the camera coverage (DORI) table. Use Print / Save as PDF to print it or save it as a PDF. The printout shows no prices.
- Print options: leave out sizes, wall measurements or DORI bands, set the zoom with a live preview, and add device close-ups. See section 33.

14. Attach a plan to an existing estimate
Already have an estimate for the job? On the BOM tab, use Attach to an existing estimate, pick the estimate and press Attach. The plan then shows on the estimate’s customer link and PDF. Attached to lists the linked estimate. Press Remove to detach it.

15. Languages
The planner, the printout and the customer pages are available in six languages: English, Español, Français, Kreyòl ayisyen, Nederlands and Papiamentu. Pick one from the language menu (globe icon) in the planner toolbar or on the /site-planner/ page. Your choice is remembered in that browser. Device labels and notes you type are not translated.

16. For customers: plan your system and request a quote
Homeowners and business owners can use the Site Planner for free. They don’t need a dealer account.
- Go to /site-planner/ and click Create a free account (or Log in). Registering takes an email address and a password.
- Your Site Planner opens in My Account. Start a plan the same way: a floor plan, a satellite map or a blank grid. You can keep up to 3 plans.
- Place cameras, link Worldstar products and check coverage. You see product names, SKUs and specs, but no prices.
- Press Request a quote. Enter your name, email, phone, company, site address, timeline and any notes, then click Send request. Worldstar receives the plan’s picture and device list with your details. You get a confirmation email, and we usually reply within one business day.

17. Build the floor plan by size
No floor plan drawing? Type the sizes and the planner draws them to scale. Open Tools or Objects and choose:
- Add room: name, width and length. The room is drawn to scale with its width and length marked and its area shown. It can also draw the four walls and leave an opening for you (see section 23).
- Add wall: length, thickness and angle.
- Add column (width, depth and rotation) and Add stairs (width, run and angle) are in the Objects group.
- Doors, windows and openings: use Door/Win in the Objects group. They go in at your building defaults, then you set width, height and sill in Properties (see section 31).
- Add text: the words and a real text height, so labels stay to scale.
Sizes use your plan’s units (feet or metres). To change one later, select it and choose Edit size….
Set the scale first. Sizes are only true to life after the scale is set. On a blank grid the scale is already set: each square is 1 m (or 5 ft).
18. Walls, doors, windows and blind spots
Choose Wall, then click the corners. Double-click or press Esc to finish. Ends snap to other walls and to 90° / 45°, and the length shows while you draw. Pick a type: Interior (drywall), Exterior (block / concrete), Fence (see-through) or Glass (see-through). Rectangle room drags four walls and a room label at once.
Door / window adds a single, double, sliding or overhead / garage door, an opening, a window or a glass storefront to a wall at your building default size. Drag it along the wall, and set width, height and sill in Properties. Widths stay inside the wall.
Objects such as trees, bushes, poles, columns, vehicles, shelving, dumpsters, signs, buildings, stairs and elevators, or your own rectangle, circle or polygon, sit in the camera’s way. Some are see-through.
Cameras see through glass, fences, openings and open doors. Solid walls and objects block the view. The area hidden behind a wall or solid object is left empty, so the gaps show where to add or move a camera (see section 28).
19. Site lights and night view
Add site lights from Light: pole / area light, wall pack, floodlight, bollard, street light or a custom light. Aim floodlights and wall packs with their handle.
Open Night view and pick a light level: bright daylight, overcast, dusk, street lighting, dim light, moonlight, dark, or a custom lux value. Set the Night light to Auto, IR on, White light on or Off. Each camera’s view then uses its IR / white-light range and minimum illumination from the product specs. Lux values are approximate.
If you set a camera’s range past its IR range, the planner warns you. If the product doesn’t list a night spec, type the range from the datasheet.
20. Layers and access control
The CCTV, Network and Access control buttons in the toolbar show or hide each layer, so you can print or review one system at a time.
The Access control palette has card, fingerprint and face readers, keypads, video intercom / door stations, locks, exit devices and turnstiles / barrier gates. Wire them with the Access wiring cable type. The Network tab flags powered readers and door stations that have no power source.
21. Share a plan and add comments (dealers)
Press Share to invite someone by email as an Editor, Commenter or Viewer. Editors can change the plan. Commenters and viewers can only look and comment. Prices are shown only to dealer accounts.
Copy link copies the plan’s view-only link and shows “Copied!”. If there is no link yet, Create view-only link and copy makes one. On phones, a Share… button opens the phone’s share sheet.
Press Comment and tap the plan to pin a note. While others have the plan open, their initials show in the toolbar.
22. Getting around the plan
- Pan: hold Space and drag, in any tool, even with a camera or several items selected and in Full screen. You can also drag with the middle mouse button. Space still types normally in text boxes. On touch screens, drag with one finger on empty canvas.
- Zoom: scroll, pinch, or press + / −. 0 and Fit show the whole plan.
- Show grid and Snap to grid are in the toolbar. Full screen gives you more room.
- Favorites keeps the devices you use most at hand.
- Shortcuts: Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y undo / redo, Ctrl+D duplicate, Ctrl+drag copy, R rotate, arrow keys nudge, Delete removes, Ctrl+S saves.
23. Room walls and openings
Add room can draw the room’s four walls for you. Type the width and length, leave Add walls automatically ticked and pick a wall type (Interior is the default). The walls block camera views like any other wall. You can select them, snap to them and edit them one at a time. When you move, resize (Edit size…) or delete the room, its walls go with it, and one Undo removes the room and its walls together.
Tick Add an opening to leave a doorless gap. Type its width and pick the wall (north, south, east or west). It is centred unless you type an offset from the left or top corner.
To add a doorless gap to any wall, use Door/Win in the Objects group and choose an opening. It goes in at your building default width and is drawn to scale with an “Opening” width label, and cameras see through it. Drag it along the wall, or change its width in Properties. Openings appear in print, PDF and share links.
24. Import a CAD floor plan (DXF)
- In Properties, choose Add drawing and pick a
.dxffile (ASCII DXF, any version). - The Import CAD floor plan dialog opens:
- Drawing units are read from the file. If the file doesn’t say, the planner guesses from the drawing’s size and asks you to confirm.
- Scale factor is for drawings that weren’t drawn 1:1.
- Wall type is the type given to the imported walls.
- Layers: tick the layers that hold walls. Dimension, text, hatch, grid, furniture and title-block layers start unticked.
- Options: Doors and windows from blocks, Closed rectangles as rooms and Room names from text.
- Check the preview and the summary (walls, rooms, doors / windows and size), then click Import.
Lines and polylines become walls, and arcs become short wall segments. Closed rectangles with one name inside become rooms, and door / window blocks become openings in the nearest wall. One Undo removes the whole import.
DWG files can’t be read in the browser. In your CAD program, use Save As / Export → DXF (ASCII), or export a PDF and add it as a drawing to trace over.
25. Select and move several items
- Box select: with the Select tool, drag on empty canvas. Hold Shift or Ctrl to add to the current selection.
- One by one: Ctrl + click (Cmd + click on Mac) adds an item to the selection or removes it.
- Move: drag any selected item and everything moves together. One Undo (Ctrl+Z) puts it all back.
- Arrow keys nudge the selection, and Delete removes it. Click empty canvas to clear the selection.
- When you move a room, its walls go with it. Doors and windows stay in their walls, and locked items don’t move.
- Holding Space always pans, never draws a selection box. On touch screens, a one-finger drag on empty canvas pans.
26. Move a room’s name label
Select a room and drag its name and area label anywhere inside the room. The position is saved with the room. It moves with the room, stays inside it when you resize it, and is kept in print / PDF, PNG, share links, copies and duplicates.
To pick a set spot, use Label position in Properties: Top left, Top centre, Top right, Middle left, Centre, Middle right, Bottom left, Bottom centre or Bottom right. To go back to the default (top left), double-click the label or press Reset label position. Older plans keep their labels where they were.
27. Lock a room to its walls
Select a room, and the panel finds the straight walls along its edges and links them, including walls you drew separately, walls from a DXF import and walls in older plans. Linked walls move, resize from the corner, copy, duplicate and delete together with the room, in one Undo step.
- Edges with no wall are listed. Press Add missing walls to draw them.
- Select a room and some walls, then choose Lock selected walls to the room.
- Unlock from walls (on the room) or Unlock from room (on a wall) removes the link.
- Dragging a locked wall moves the whole room. Its corner handles are blocked, and a message tells you why.
28. Walls block camera view
The plan option Walls block camera view is on by default, including for existing plans. Solid walls cut camera views and DORI bands. Doors (unless marked closed), windows, openings, glass walls and fences let the view through.
Only the area each camera can actually see is drawn. The space behind a wall or solid object is left empty on screen, in print, in PNG exports and in shared plans. Turn the option off to show full camera ranges again.
Still a planning tool. Views are cut in 2D on the plan. Check mounting height, glare and real obstructions on site.
29. Copy with Ctrl + drag
Hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and drag any item to drop a copy where you let go. The original stays where it was. It works on a whole selection too. Copies get the next free label, and one Undo removes them. Cable runs are not copied.
30. Devices tab
The Devices tab lists every device on the plan. Search the list, or rename a device in place. Click a name and the map glides to that device, selects it and briefly highlights it. Duplicate names get a number so each one is easy to tell apart.
31. Building defaults for doors and windows
Plan settings have a Building defaults section with the standard sizes for doors, windows and openings (a door starts at 3 ft / 0.9 m). New doors, windows and openings go in at those sizes. Select one to change its width, height or sill in Properties. Widths stay inside the wall.
32. Security / Perimeter tools
The Security / Perimeter group has Fence line, Sliding gate, Swing gate, Double swing gate, Barrier arm, Vehicle barrier / wedge, Bollard, Security / safety post and Turnstile / barrier gate.
- Gates and barriers start at 12 ft, bollards at 1 ft and posts at 6 in. Change the size in Properties.
- They appear in the legend, in print and in PNG exports.
- They are drawing items only and are not added to the bill of materials.
33. Print options and PNG
- Leave out: sizes, wall measurements or DORI bands.
- Zoom: − / slider / + , Fit (the default) or Whole map, with a live preview.
- Device close-ups: small, medium or large, two or three per row.
- Map plans print with sharper map tiles, and overlapping labels are moved apart with leader lines.
- Save PNG saves the same layout as a 2x image. “Preparing your print…” shows while it builds.
34. Create estimate from a plan (dealers)
Select some items and choose Create estimate… from the right-click menu, or use it in the BOM tab’s Estimate section and pick Selected items or All devices. A new draft estimate is made at your normal selling prices. Nothing is sent to the customer, and the option is hidden from customer accounts. Your estimates key must be unlocked. Cable runs are counted only when both ends are selected.
From there: share the estimate for approval, then convert it to an invoice in one click and record payments (see the Dealer Estimates Guide).
FAQ
What does DORI mean?
DORI stands for Detect, Observe, Recognize and Identify, the four levels of detail defined in IEC 62676-4. The planner draws them as coloured bands inside each camera's cone: Detect (25 pixels per metre, you can tell a person is there), Observe (63 px/m, you can see what they are doing), Recognize (125 px/m, you can tell whether it is someone you know) and Identify (250 px/m, enough detail to identify a stranger). Each band ends where the camera's resolution, spread over its view angle, drops below that density.
Where do the DORI distances come from?
If the product's spec sheet lists DORI distances, the planner uses them and shows the source as specs. Otherwise it calculates them from the camera's horizontal pixels and view angle and shows calculated. You can type your own values to override either one.
How accurate is the plan?
It is a planning tool, not a survey. Fields of view, DORI distances, IR range, PoE draw and cable lengths are approximate. They assume good lighting and a correct scale, and apart from walls and solid objects (see section 28), they don't account for glare, mounting height or weather. Cable lengths are straight lines plus the slack you set (10% by default), not the actual routing path. Always confirm against the product spec sheets and a site visit before you quote or install.
What languages does the Site Planner support?
Six: English, Español, Français, Kreyòl ayisyen, Nederlands and Papiamentu. Pick one from the language menu in the planner toolbar or on the /site-planner/ page. Your choice is remembered in that browser. Device labels and notes you type stay as you wrote them.
Who can see my plans?
Plans are private to your account. For dealers, the customer name, phone and site address in Site details are encrypted with your estimates key, so only you can read them. The plan name is not encrypted, so keep customer names out of it. Worldstar never contacts your customers. A customer's plan is visible to Worldstar only after they press Request a Quote, which sends the plan picture, the device list and the contact details they enter.
Do customers see dealer prices?
No. Customers see product names, SKUs and specs only. Dealer prices appear only on approved dealer accounts, on the BOM tab and in the estimate you create from the plan.
Is the map address or floor plan sent anywhere?
Address search uses public geocoding services (Photon and Nominatim / OpenStreetMap), and map imagery comes from Esri. Uploaded floor plans and saved plans stay in your account on worldstarsecuritycameras.com.
How many plans can I keep?
Dealers have no plan limit, with uploads of up to 15 MB. Customer accounts can keep up to 3 plans with uploads of up to 10 MB. Delete or reuse old plans to make room.
